PM Urges FBR to Address Tax Gap Amid Reforms

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to address the tax gap as part of ongoing reforms. The directive came during a high-level review meeting, where the PM emphasized the need to accelerate changes within the FBR.
The planning ministry reported that the FBR assured the meeting that investment would raise the tax-to-GDP ratio to 13.5% by 2029 and expand the tax net to include more individuals.
The federal government abandoned its plan to establish a new tax agency but opted to compulsorily retire non-performing officers by modifying the Civil Servants Act, enabling the retrenchment of bureaucrats during restructuring.
