UK Approves Jackdaw Gas Drilling Amid Speculation

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | UK Approves Jackdaw Gas Drilling Amid Speculation

The UK government has given the green light for drilling operations in the Jackdaw gas field located in the North Sea. This decision concludes a period of uncertainty regarding the project's future.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh authorized the North Sea Transition Authority to grant consent for the drilling, emphasizing the initiative's role in bolstering the nation's energy security during the upcoming winter.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham highlighted the decision's impact on job preservation and domestic heating, while affirming its compatibility with the government's renewable energy objectives.

The Jackdaw project is among two other initiatives, including the Rosebank oil field off Shetland, that were initially approved by the previous Conservative administration.

Drilling licenses for both projects were granted in June 2022, but faced legal challenges from environmental groups, resulting in the court overturning the approvals.
