UK Approves Jackdaw Gas Field Despite Climate Concerns

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | UK Approves Jackdaw Gas Field Despite Climate Concerns

The UK government has approved the Jackdaw gas field for production, marking the largest such approval in a decade. The decision concludes a nearly two-year legal review of the field, located approximately 150 miles east of Aberdeen, Scotland.

The field, discovered in 2005 and operated by Adura—a joint venture between Shell and Equinor—faces criticism from climate advocates who argue it will not significantly reduce household energy costs.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated the government will meet its climate obligations while adopting a pragmatic stance on North Sea oil and gas development. This approach aligns with a proposal to expand drilling in the region, as suggested by a former U.S. president.
