The United States has committed $1.4 billion to support a new electricity partnership in Burundi, aiming to expand power access for over 1.2 million households and stimulate industrial investment in the mineral-rich East African nation.

The project is projected to increase Burundi’s electrification rate from 12% to 70%, representing the largest investment in the country’s history. President Évariste Ndayishimiye emphasized that electricity serves as the foundation for economic transformation and aligns with Burundi’s Vision 2040-2060 goals.

The US State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs confirmed the partnership’s potential to significantly raise electrification levels, stating it could transform Burundi’s energy landscape and create conditions for industrial growth and job creation.
