US Army Pacific Focuses on Land Forces for China Deterrence

US Army Pacific commander General Ron Clark emphasized that land-based forces are critical for deterring China and safeguarding military operations in the Asia-Pacific region. This perspective addresses the assumption that conflicts with China would primarily involve naval and aerial engagements. Clark noted the 'tyranny of distance' complicates reliance on air and naval assets during potential U.

Clark’s command includes over 107,000 troops stationed across US Pacific territories and allied nations like South Korea and Japan, with rotational deployments in the Philippines. These forces are essential for countering China’s growing air and naval capabilities, which could restrict American military freedom of action in the region.
