Hong Kong Private Secondary Sector Grows with University Reputation Rise

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Hong Kong Private Secondary Sector Grows with University Reputation Rise

The private secondary education sector in Hong Kong has expanded significantly, driven by the growing reputation of local universities. According to Education Bureau data, the number of private secondary institutions rose from 16 to 25 between 2021-22 and 2025-26, marking a 56.3 per cent increase.

The Education Bureau attributes this growth to a stronger local economy and changing parental preferences. The sector's expansion reflects broader shifts in educational demand and investment in secondary schooling.

School leaders noted an increasing interest from mainland Chinese and international students in Hong Kong universities, citing the institutions' enhanced global standing. This trend is influenced by geopolitical factors and the perception of Hong Kong's educational quality.
