ANC Faces Legal Challenge Over R36.4m Election Debt

Digital services company Eltel has initiated a legal action against the African National Congress (ANC), demanding repayment of R36.4m owed for its 2019 election campaign services. The company claims the debt threatens its operational stability and could lead to liquidation.
Eltel director Asif Casoojee filed urgent papers in the Johannesburg high court, warning that the delay in recovering the debt jeopardizes the company's continued operations. The legal action seeks an order compelling the ANC to pay the outstanding principal and accumulated interest.
The ANC's deputy president, Paul Mashatile, is cited in the court application, indicating his potential involvement in the dispute. Eltel has also requested the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to withhold ANC funding until the debt is settled.
