Pakistan Demands Security Council Reform

KOKO Business | People, Ideas, Markets, Growth | Pakistan Demands Security Council Reform

Pakistan has called for the abolition or significant restrictions on the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) veto power, emphasizing the need for democratic and equitable reforms. The country's stance highlights concerns over the misuse of veto power, which it claims undermines the effectiveness of the council and perpetuates global inequalities.

During a UN General Assembly debate, Gul Qaiser Sarwani, Counsellor and Political Coordinator at Pakistan’s Mission to the UN, stated that strategic rivalries among permanent members have hindered collective action on international peace and security. He warned that these narrow interests have weakened the credibility of the United Nations.

Pakistan also opposes the expansion of veto power and advocates for greater accountability within the UNSC. The country's proposals focus on ensuring that the council reflects a more representative and democratic international system.
